How to Use
When hormones shift in the second half of a woman's cycle, headaches can strike. At onset of headaches, part of a holistic approach to self-care can include applying Kavana's Peppermint Poem as needed, to temples, hairline, collarbone, back of neck, shoulders and inner wrists, and inhale deeply.
Meadowfoam seed oil (Limnanthes alba): Meadowfoam seed oil is a waxy oil, similar to Jojoba. It is non-comodogenic (doesn't block pores), contains over 98% long chain fatty acids, making it extremely stable and highly resistant to oxidation and heat, though it may solidify a bit in cold conditions. (source)
It's non-greasy texture, is known to help lock in moisture and prevent trans-epidermal water loss, and may help your skin form a barrier to lock in moisture and deliver nutrients deep into your epidermis. (source) It can help bind fragrance and keep it stable, making it excellent for aromatherapy applications, like Kavana's Perfume Poems.
Rice Bran oil (RBO) (Oryza Sativa): Prized by Japanese women for centuries, as it has been shown to exhibit brightening and skin softening properties. RBO contains some phytochemicals (plant chemicals) such as tocotrienols, tocopherols, phytosterols, polyphenols, squalene and powerful anti-oxidant gamma oryzanol, that support skin's health. The high level of Vitamins E and B, omega 9 and a rich array of fatty acids, beta-carotene, CoQ10 and lycopene, may help shield the skin from environmental and internal stressors. (source) It is not winterized, meaning, it may get cloudy in cold temperatures. If this happens, simply heat it gently under running warm-hot water till cloudiness disappears
Grapefruit (Citrus paradisii): If you are feeling tired or totally exhausted, sniffing Grapefruit essential oil may help wake you up and promote feelings of vitality. Limonene, the main chemical constituent of Grapefruit oil, is believed to help cytokine production, the body's natural immune response. The uplifting aroma emitted from this citrus scent may also help banish your PMS lethargy. It may help boost circulation, reduce inflammation, increase blood flow and relieve stress. The blood vessel dilating effects of grapefruit, may be useful as a natural remedy for PMS headaches, fatigue, bloating and muscle pains.
Basil (Ocimum basilicum): Triple blind studies have shown that this herb has helped reduce both the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks. (source) (source). While PMS headaches can also be caused by dehydration, fresh basil has analgesic properties (source) that can help relieve pain, so adding a few leaves of this Italian herb to a cup of boiling water, may also be helpful to those with 'dehydration headaches'.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita): This refreshing, 'cephalic' or wakefulness promoting essential oil, may help clear the head and is one of the most commonly used essential oils to treat headaches and migraine attacks (source). It contains cooling menthol along with other active chemical constituents, including mentone, limonene, menthene and phellandrene which, which can help relax muscles and ease painby promoting blood flow and relaxing tense muscles. (source)
Tension headaches can be common kinds of PMS headaches, where it feels like a clamp is tightening around your head and your neck. Research shows applying diluted peppermint oil, may reduced the intensity of tension-type headaches after 15 minutes. (source)
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis): Another famliar kitchen herb, rosemary is helpful for mid-afternoon slumps, and when you feel a headache might be coming on. "Rosemary oil has powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. It’s been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years for stress reduction, pain relief, and improved circulation, which can all help headaches." (source)
Rosemary Oleoresin: Also known as Rosemary Oil Extract or ROE is an oil soluble, natural extract of the leaves of the rosemary plant used to retard rancidity in natural oils. As with any antioxidant, to be effective Rosemary Oleoresin must be added to oils when they are fresh, before oxidation has started.
